Meteora



Meteora


Meteora is located in the Central Greece. A number of medieval churches or monasteries hanging on the sides and the top of a steep rock hill. Name Meteora Meteoros derived from the Greek word meaning "suspended in the air". Construction of the monastery began when Turkish occupation in the 14th century. When it papas, priests or monks of the Greek Orthodox monastery built as a place of refuge. Now monasteries are protected as a heritage site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
The history of development initiated by Athanasios of Meteora monasteries of Mount Athos Koinovitis who in 1344 brought a group of followers to Meteora. From 1356-1372, he founded a large monastery on Broad Rock Meteoron, which is perfect for the monks, they were safe from political upheaval and had complete control of entry to the monastery. The only way to reach it by climbing a long ladder, which was created when the monks felt threatened. To date, there are six monasteries that still can be used in Meteora.
